# Welcome to Yazi

What Yazi is, how a study runs from start to finish, and how these docs are organised.

Yazi is a research platform that runs your studies inside WhatsApp. You build a study in the Yazi web app, invite people, and they take part in a normal WhatsApp chat on their own phone, with nothing to download and no account to create.

**In short:** Yazi runs surveys, AI-moderated interviews, diary studies and multi-activity studies over WhatsApp. You build and manage everything at [app.askyazi.com](https://app.askyazi.com). Participants answer in WhatsApp with text, taps, voice notes, photos and videos, and results appear in Yazi as they come in.

## What you can run

| Study type                    | What it is                                                                                                            | Good for                                                   |
| ----------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Survey**                    | Structured questions: single and multi-select, matrix, rating scales, open text, voice notes, photos, video and more. | Quant work, screeners, customer feedback, trackers.        |
| **AI interview**              | An AI moderator asks open questions and follows up on each answer, usually after a short survey section.              | In-depth qualitative work at scale.                        |
| **Diary or recurring survey** | The same questions repeated on a schedule, or a set of daily tasks.                                                   | Habits, usage over time, in-home tests.                    |
| **Multi-activity study**      | Two or more activities (surveys, AI interviews, diaries) in one study, unlocking in order.                            | Longer qual projects, pre and post designs, mixed methods. |

A piece of research in Yazi is called a **study**. Each survey, interview or diary inside it is an **activity**. See [Key concepts and glossary](/start-here/key-concepts-and-glossary.md) for the full vocabulary.

## How a study runs, end to end

### Build

Click **+ New Research** on the Dashboard. Upload a brief or questionnaire and let Yazi draft the study, or build it question by question. Set languages, logic, quotas and rewards in the **Build** tab. [Create a study](/build-a-study/create-a-study.md)

### Test

Try the study yourself before anyone else sees it. Use the in-app Test Simulator, or open the test link on your own phone to go through it in real WhatsApp. Test answers are marked as test data and kept out of your results. [Test your study](/study-types/test-your-study.md)

### Invite

Publish the study and go live, then reach participants from the **Share** tab: share a link or QR code, send a WhatsApp broadcast to your own list, or recruit a paid panel. [Ways to invite participants](/reach-participants/ways-to-invite-participants.md)

### Field

Participants take part in WhatsApp at their own pace. They can stop and come back later and carry on where they left off. Automatic reminders can nudge people who have not finished. [Reminders](/reach-participants/reminders.md)

### Monitor

Watch progress on the **Share** tab: who has been sent the invite, who has started, who has finished, and each person's trust verdict. You can take over a live chat yourself if someone needs help. [Participants tab](/monitor-fieldwork/participants-tab.md)

### Analyse

Read answers, transcripts and media in **Responses**, and charts, cross-tabs, video reels and AI-written reports in **Reporting**.
